Why KodiakCare
I grew up with dogs being a part of the family starting with a Chihuahua / Poodle mix named Adanac, then Numminen, an energetic Rat Terrier. Then came Charlie, a large Boxer who was a package deal when I married my husband. We currently have Tank, a perfectly stubborn English Bulldog. My dogs have been with me through many life adventures, both happy and tough, and have been my rock through it all, sharing in the joy and helping me through the pain. We have been lucky enough to have healthy dogs that lived long lives in the past and medical expenses were not a concern, except for Tank. Fortunately, we’ve had the financial resources to manage through the unexpected medical bills. We are active in the Bulldog rescue community and see how often people bring cute, wrinkly Bulldogs into their family without understanding the potential future costs of care for the breed. The family loves their dog and can maintain regular vet care, but the unexpected costs to fix issues the myriad of health issues related to the breed become too much and they must choose to surrender their furry family member or put them down. It breaks my heart to think that money is the only thing keeping them from getting the medical procedure(s) their dog needs and knowing that once the issues is corrected, they can live happy, healthy lives. I got involved in KodiakCare to help loving dog parents of all breeds not to have to make these decisions and to keep furry kids with their families.
A favorite personal dog story
Tank is the village heartthrob. He loves his walks up the few blocks into the village where he thinks everyone has gathered to pet him and give him attention. He gets kids calling his name across the street, treats from the regulars at the coffee shop and is always looking to see if the ice cream shop is open for tastings. What he does not like is having to head home. He puts on the brakes and will not walk forward without out dragging on the leash or being carried, which is tough with 55 pounds of wrinkles. He will stop and roll on his back in the green grass or sit and look back longingly at the village and his people. So, finally, we bought Tank a red wagon for the trip home and he loves sitting in his wagon, like he is in a parade, smiling at all the cars that go by, and people often stop for pictures of Tank in his wagon.
A favorite dog, other than your own
Tank follows many dog accounts on Instagram and although it is tough to pick a favorite, I always love seeing Eggnog and Igloo (@eggnogthebulldog) with their positive messages and funny shenanigans.
