Why kodiakcare

Dogs have always been an important part of my life. I remember on my first day of kindergarten, walking my dog, Luke, or more accurately, Luke walking me, to the bus stop and feeling much more confident knowing he was by my side before I had to say goodbye to my mom and board that big yellow bus. Luke was there for my family through everything, even seeing me off to college. KodiakCare knows there are thousands of families with a Luke of their own and we aim to help continue their stories for years to come.

A Favorite personal dog story

Five years ago, my husband and I rescued our dog, Dewey, from the Humane Society. Dewey had come from an abusive home and took some time to come out of his shell. When our youngest child was born, Dewey refused to leave our newborn’s side, and has been her unofficial guardian ever since. Dewey’s courage and affection continued to grow as our children grew and I couldn’t imagine our family without him.

A favorite dog, other than your own

I think one of the most remarkable characteristics about dogs is their ability to stay positive in the face of adversity. Anyone who has met a three-legged dog can attest to that. In our extended family, there is Xena, the most beautiful rugged mix breed terrier rescue with three legs. She races as fast as the four-legged competition and sometimes Xena needs to be protected from her own confidence as she tries to jump higher than her three legs allow. Nothing holds Xena back from loving life to the fullest.
