Why KodiakCare

Simply put,  I love all animals, but especially dogs.

I have always gravitated toward animals over 10 years old because I knew I may be their last chance at being adopted. Naturally, having older dogs and cats means they need more medical care.

Knowing there are dogs who lose their lives because their parents can’t afford life-saving care breaks my heart, so I leapt at the chance to be a part of KodiakCare.

A favorite personal dog story

Upon arriving at Montego Bay Animal Haven in Jamaica, I was fully convinced I was capable of leaving there without an additional dog. My husband, however, knew better.

Visitors travel there to hike with the organization’s 200+ rescue dogs. It seemed like it would be difficult to fall in love with one dog in a vast sea of hundreds, which led to my false confidence in leaving there without one. Little did I know a dog would choose us.

Throughout the hike we would scan the wild pack of dogs all running and jumping and there she was, a shy dog sitting about 20 meters away… and constantly staring at us. She approached us at the end of the hike and we learned that this particular dog would be much better suited to a quiet home life. We were sold. One month later she took her first ever flight and Merry was home!
